Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (iastm)

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

If you have been a patient here, you know at Elite Physical Therapy and Performance we use a vast array of manual therapy (hands-on) techniques to help you feel better and get you back to the activities that you want to enjoy again.

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a technique used to manipulate soft tissue. We use a specialized instrument in place of our hands to apply direct pressure or a sweeping scraping motion. This allows us to give you more targeted therapy than our hands alone can provide.

Benefits of IASTM

Research has shown that scraping techniques trigger a cascade of healing processes which result in tissue remodeling. This allows for improved mobility and functionality. Benefits/Uses of IASTM include:

  • Decreased muscle tension

  • Helps swelling and lymphatic drainage

  • Diminishes scar tissue

  • Releases trigger points

  • Decreases tissue adhesions and abnormalities on tendons and ligaments

  • Desensitizes soft tissue for pain response
