Vertigo
Vertigo
Vertigo is the sensation of dizziness or that your environment is moving. Vertigo can be caused by inner ear imbalances (BPPV) and peripheral or central nervous system dysfunction. There are many cases where the explanation for onset is not known.
What are the Symptoms of BPPV?
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common causes of vertigo and is caused by inner ear dysfunction. Your inner ear is made up of a labyrinth of fluid-filled canals that contain crystals and hair cells, whose position and motion within the labyrinth give a person a sense of position in space and acceleration. If those crystals dislodge and become stuck, then a person will get a signal of position or motion that isn’t consistent with what their body is actually experiencing, giving them the sensation of vertigo. A distinguishing factor of BPPV is that symptoms are typically brief (less than a minute) and affected by changes in head position. Common symptoms associated with vertigo include:
Headache
Dizziness
Visual impairments
Nausea
Tinnitus
Balance/Coordination Issues
Light/Noise/Motion Sensitivities
Light-headedness
Neck Pain
Sleep Impairment
What is Vestibular Rehabilitation?
Vestibular rehabilitation is a branch of physical therapy that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of vertigo and balance-related symptoms. Physical Therapy can help alleviate vertigo and resolve the cause with these techniques:
Gaze stabilization
Accommodation
Balance training
Canalith repositioning maneuvers
Safety and prevention educations
Fall prevention and recovery strategies
Aid in diagnosis and care of more centralized or complex issues
