Modalities

Modalities

Modalities are agents or aids used to achieve a desired therapeutic response in order to enhance the effects of physical therapy treatment. There are many different types of modalities that yield many different effects.

Thermotherapy:

The application of heat is often done using a moist heat pack on the body region. Responses to heat include improved blood flow, promote relaxation, and increased soft tissue extensibility.

Cryotherapy:

The application of cold, either as a cold pack or with an ice massage. Responses to cold treatment include pain relief and prevention of swelling.

Electrical Stimulation:

Use of electrical current that can be used to promote relaxation, modulate pain levels, control muscle contractions, and administer medication with iontophoresis.

Ultrasound:

Use of sound waves transmitted through the skin to improve blood flow, provide deep heat to specific tissues, promote tissue healing, reduce pain, and administer medication with phonophoresis.

Mechanical Traction:

Use of a device to provide a traction force to different parts of the spine. Traction helps to relieve spinal compression, improve joint mobility, reduce pain and neural symptoms, and promote better spinal alignment.
